BERLIN – Defending champion Slovenia and NBA superstar Luka Doncic failed to reach the quarterfinals of the European Basketball Championship. European champion 2017 lost in Berlin after a bad start with 87: 90 (39: 58) against the outsider Poland.

Dallas Mavericks pro Doncic, who has already scored 47 points in the game in this tournament, had only 14 points and flew off the court early after his fifth personal foul. A very weak first half was fatal for the Slovenians.

Before Doncic, the Serbian favorite with Nikola Jokic and the Greek around Giannis Antetokounmpo were eliminated. So the top three NBA stars will leave the finals in Germany without medals. On the Polish side, Mateusz Ponitka dominated with a rare triple (26 points, 15 assists, ten assists). The outer circle will meet France in the semi-finals on September 16 (17:15 / Magentasport), which previously defeated Italy 93:85 (77:77, 38:31) after extra time.

A year after Olympic silver in Tokyo, France is on track for another medal. go Rudy Gobert (19 points and 14 rebounds) and Evan Fournier (17) in the semifinals in front of 6324 spectators – including Dennis Schröder, the captain of Germany – guaranteed progress. The highest score was Thomas Heurtel (20). Led by passionate coach Gianmarco Pozzecco, the Italians failed to pull off another surprise three days after a stunning coup against Serbia’s top-flight.
