Despite interest from Chelsea FC, Christoph Freund will remain as sporting director of Red Bull Salzburg. This was officially announced by Austria in the announcement of the club from Austria.
The new owner of Chelsea FC around the American Todd Boehly is currently looking for a strong man as the sporting director for the target transfer policy. One candidate was Christoph Freund, but the Austrian gave the basket to the Blues.
Freund also has a long-term contract in Salzburg
Instead, the 45-year-old will remain at Red Bull Salzburg in his role as sporting director. “As I already confirmed in the interview, Chelsea FC is interested in me,” Freund said in the club’s statement and continued: “But I have concluded that I am in the best hands with FC Red Bull Salzburg and the change is. Out of the question for me.”
Freund succeeded Ralf Rangnick as sporting director in Salzburg in 2015. Before that, he worked as a team manager and sports coordinator for the Austrian bulls. His contract with Salzburg runs until 2026.
He discovered players such as Sadio Mane, Naby Keita, Erling Haaland and Dayot Upamecano, among others, who sold profitably after their time in Salzburg. During Freund’s time as sporting director, Salzburg achieved a transfer surplus of 332 million euros.
