Five free agents Manchester United could sign in the summer transfer window

With just over a month or so of the 2022/23 campaign remaining, attention will soon switch to the summer transfer window and preparations for next season.

Manchester Unitedso far, have enjoyed a productive first campaign under manager Erik ten Hagwinning the Carabao Cup and being on course to secure a top-four finish. They could still add two more trophies to their collection before the end of the campaign in the form of both the Europa League and the FA Cup.

Regardless of whether United end the campaign with one, two or even three trophies, Ten Hag has ambitions to strengthen his squad this forthcoming summer. The Dutchman is understood to have pinpointed a striker as his top priority while he is also eager to add a new central midfielder to his ranks.

Frenkie de Jong and Jude Bellingham are United’s top targets in midfield, while Harry Kane and Victor Osimhen are among those earmarked for the striker position, with Kane Ten Hag’s preferred target.

Should United land Kane, a deal to bring him to Old Trafford would eat heavily into their transfer budget, meaning they could be forced to box clever when attempting to strengthen other areas.

Here are some players who are set to become free agents this summer and could appeal to United in the transfer market.

Out-of-contract at the end of the season, centre-back Ndicka is expected to leave German club Eintracht Frankfurt and test himself elsewhere. Strong and powerful, the 23-year-old is not expected to be light on admirers and has already been linked with Liverpool. He is considered to be one of the most promising defenders in the Bundesliga and is capable of picking a pass and playing the ball out from the back. At the age of 23, he would possibly be content with a squad rotation role at United, especially if Harry Maguire or Victor Lindelof depart this summer. He could be a suitable back-up option for Raphael Varane, who often picks up injury issues.

As Leicester City’s hopes of Premier League survival fade, so do their chances of keeping hold of Youri Tielemans. Should the Foxes be relegated, there is absolutely no chance of retaining the Belgian international. Big-name European giants will be queueing up for the opportunity to sign him on a free transfer. He is technically gifted and has been one of the Premier League’s best box-to-box midfielders in recent years. At the age of 25, he is worth taking a gamble on, especially on a free transfer. United signed Christian Eriksen for nothing last summer and that has worked out brilliantly. Tielemans would be a useful weapon to have in the squad.

Lyon ace Aouar seemed destined to move to England in the summer of 2021 given the length of time Arsenal spent chasing his signature. However, a move never came to fruition, meaning he has stayed in France ever since. But with his contract up at the end of this season, the time may be right for him to move on and test himself elsewhere. He is yet to live up to expectations, but Ten Hag has proven he can get a tune out of most players he works with. At the age of 24, you would like to think the best is still to come. He could be a gamble worth taking for United to strengthen their midfield depth.

Another Lyon player that United could run the rule over is striker Dembele, who has been a target for them in the past. The former Celtic man is expected to leave the French club at the end of the season and will be on the hunt for new employment. He is by no means the elite-level striker that United need and want, but he could be a suitable back-up option to warm the bench and offer the Reds something a little bit different in certain situations. If Ten Hag wants two strikers this summer, one being a squad player, Dembele could fit the bill.

Closely linked with a move to United in recent months, Borussia Monchengladbach ace Thuram could be a signing very much worth exploring. He has scored 16 goals in all competitions this season, including 13 in the Bundesliga, meaning he is the division’s joint-second highest goalscorer this term. He is quick, strong and powerful, meaning he would bring an array of different qualities to United’s attacking pool. Again, he probably isn’t the elite-level striker the Reds are after, but he could be a very suitable back-up option. He would be a shrewd addition for free.
