Giroud opens up on ‘very special’ feeling after beating Napoli and hopes to meet Inter

AC Milan striker Olivier Giroud has revealed his emotions after scoring the goal that booked a place in the Champions League semi-finals, also stating that he would welcome a derby in the final four.

Milan booked their place in the semi-finals of the Champions League for the first time since the 2006-07 season as they drew 1-1 at the Stadio Diego Armando Maradona, sealing a 2-1 aggregate victory on a dramatic night.

The French striker saw a penalty saved in the first half but he made up for it with a close range finish after an excellent run from Rafael Leao, and Khvicha Kvaratskhelia had his spot kick kept out by Mike Maignan before Victor Osimhen’s late leveller which proved to be a consolation.

Giroud spoke to Sky Italia at the end of the game to reflect on what was a very hard fought draw on the night where everyone put in a shift, with his comments relayed by MilanNews.

Tell us through the emotions of your goal…

“It was very special for me, I was frustrated for having missed the penalty. It’s been a long time since I missed one, I was very disappointed but the most important thing is that I stayed in the game.

“Meret still made a good save with his foot, but I never gave up and thought I’d have another chance. Rafa did everything, I was here. Fantastic. He did well, a great game. All together we showed a good team spirit. Now we can dream.

What are you feeling?

“A lot of stuff. It’s a very special thing. Now there are only very strong teams. Now let’s recover in the league, now let’s celebrate together in the locker room. Now we can dream but it’s always difficult. Serenity and calm.”

Would you fancy a semi-final against Inter?

“Yes why not. It would be a good semi-final. But I think Benfica haven’t said their last word yet.”
