Liverpool could sign midfielder compared to Luka Modric for just £17.6m

When you’re looking for players who will fit seamlessly in to your team, there’s no harm in purchasing talent from the same club (or ownership group) more than once. Liverpool bought several recent members of their squad from the Red Bull teams and they may be looking to add another to their ranks too.

And now that the Reds have ended their interest in Jude Bellinghamthey are certain to be linked with many midfielders over the next few months. Neil Jones of Goal has stated that Salzburg’s Luka Sucic is one of several who is “admired” by the club, with Transfermarkt estimating his market value at just 20m euros (£17.6m).

The young Croatian has previously been described as the ‘next Luka Modric’ but being called the next anyone can be a heavy burden to bear, particularly when it’s a countryman. Just ask former Liverpool midfielder Bruno Cheyrou, who was memorably compared to Zinedine Zidane by Gerard Houllier, but proved to be nowhere near as good.

Sucic and Modric take up similar positions on the right of midfield, albeit Salzburg manager Matthias Jaissle often sends his side out in a 4-4-2 formation with a diamond midfield, rather than the 4-3-3 which Carlo Ancelotti utilises at Real Madrid. However, the younger of the two players is far more inclined to take a shot at goal, as he averages almost twice as many per game as his illustrious elder.

In fact, there aren’t many midfielders around who average as many shots per 90 minutes as Sucic. While Austria is not one of Europe’s big five leagues, only five midfielders in England, France, Germany, Italy or Spain attempted to score more frequently than he did last season, though his rate has since cooled off a little.

And his conversion rate has frozen entirely, with not one of Sucic’s 23 shots finding the net this season. However, he has bypassed his assist total for the whole of 2021/22, and these things can fluctuate in waves, especially for a youngster still finding their feet in the game. With a tally of five Opta-defined big chances set up, his record of four assists this season looks reasonably fair.
